What A Colonoscopy Reminded Me About Marriage

Yesterday, I had my first colonoscopy.

If you have not had one and don’t want to hear about this screening until you absolutely must, I suggest you stop here and click away or fixate on the happy penguins I’ve provided below.

via GIPHY

For those still reading, let’s talk earnestly about colonoscopies. They stink. Not because the scope part is bad; you’re knocked out and don’t remember a thing about that part. But the preparation of clearing out your colon for this necessary screening can be brutal.

My preparation time

Now there’s a range of experience, with some reporting it’s not that bad and others describing tearful times on the toilet during which their discomfort on a scale from 1 to 10 would be 12½. My experience fell somewhere around an 8.

I was warned by wonderful friends, but the first few hours after I drank the first bottle of clears-colon-quickly juice, I was fine. A few visits to the restroom, but no big deal. I thought I’d weather this thing like a champ.

And then, it hit. Like a tornado appearing in the horizon, moving at ballistic speed, and ramming into you with all the force of “I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Then comes the second bottle of solution. And I’m using the chemical definition of “solution” here, because if this is the solution-answer to anything, I don’t want to know the question.

Of course, this is all timed the night before in a way to make sure you sleep as little as possible. Maybe so that you’ll be too weak to fight back when you get to the surgical center and remember exactly where that scope is going.

Without going into further detail, let’s just say that one’s dignity is not exactly a high priority during this preparation process.

Two other couples in the waiting room

What does this all have to do with marriage? Well, the morning of the procedure, two other couples were also waiting in the lobby to be called, and both were clearly married—one much older, and another middle-aged like us.

When the elderly man was called, his wife was in the restroom, and he was very concerned about not being able to touch base with her first and leaving behind her purse and belongings. The front desk staff reassured him and took care of the wife’s stuff, and when she emerged, they immediately informed her where her husband had gone.

With the second couple, it was the wife getting the procedure, and as she was filling out paperwork, her husband simply brushed his hand over her head and hair—loving and familiar, a simple reminder he was there.

Sweet, huh?

And it’s my turn…

Once called back, I was given the first bed in a row of intake rooms separated by curtains. From that spot, I could hear the initial questions a nurse asked the people coming through for a procedure. When queried about whether the staff should talk to a spouse about how things were going, every person said yes. Meaning the marrieds had someone there, caring how things went, trusted to support and advocate for the patient.

Then there was the moment when my RN informed me that colon is “aired up” for visibility during the procedure, meaning afterwards…the air needs to come out. As in, they want it to come out. For a Southern gal raised with a certain view of manners, this is a challenge. I replied, “Great, so you call the spouse back into recovery, and then we’re supposed to fart all we can with them there?” The answer is yes.

Yet I know that even after all of that, my husband will find me attractive. Go figure.

Finally, there was the recovery time as I was waking up from general anesthesia. If you haven’t experienced this, it’s a bit like going from tipsy to buzzed to sober. (And now I just realized that I’m also assuming you’ve been intoxicated at some point in your life and let you know I have. I don’t do it anymore, but I was once young and stupid. Anyway, digression over.)

In that tipsy state, your filters are down. I found myself saying stuff with no ability to track the thought fully before it spilled out of my mouth. I mean, much worse than my usual inability. And what did I say? I got mushy and gushed to my husband about how much I love him.

Benefits of marriage that aren’t in the vows

Look, this marriage thing ain’t always easy, including the sex part about which I mostly write. I don’t pretend otherwise. It requires intention and effort to foster the kind of relationship we should have for a lifetime of love. But oh, the benefits!

  • Someone to drive you to and from your medical procedures
  • Someone to “have your back” when you’re unconscious and unable to speak for yourself
  • Someone who cares how you’re doing, including the health of your colon
  • Someone who loves you in spite having seen up-close-and-personal photographs of your colon
  • Someone who still thinks you’re sexy, even after you’ve farted while lying on a gurney in a hospital gown

The author of Ecclesiastes knew this too when he wrote:

Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
(4:9-12)

What have you learned about the benefits of marriage in the face of health challenges or procedures?

Oh, and if you’ve had a colonoscopy, you already know this, but if you haven’t, it’s in your future. Allow me to provide one important tip: if at all possible, before your colonoscopy prep, purchase a toilet with a bidet. Just trust me on this one.

Family Gets Flipped Off by Monkey Who Grabbed Camera for Selfie

Family Flipped Off by Monkey Who Grabbed Camera for Selfie

(TMU) — While vacationing in Bali, a family from Queensland, Australia learned the hard way to never trust a monkey. The family of five was wandering through Monkey Forest in Ubud, Bali, when a monkey joined in on the group selfie and flipped its middle finger at the lens. The laughable event has since gone viral.

According to the Daily Mail, parents Judy and Simon—along with their three kids—spent one of their vacation days exploring Monkey Forest. While strolling through the popular tourist destination, they asked a local guide to take some photos. Only later did they realize a monkey had flipped off the camera while the photos were being taken.

Judy recalled that, as the family looked at the photograph, they all burst out laughing. “We were only in Bali for a week and thought it would be fun to go on a day tour around Bali,” she said.

“As part of the tour, we went to the monkey forest. I thought it would be a fun experience. While we were there, a guide offered to take our photo. But as he did, a monkey suddenly came in front of the camera.”

“The guide had peanuts in his hand and then began feeding him. It was really funny. As I was flicking through the photos afterwards, I noticed that in one of them the monkey was actually giving us the finger.

I showed my husband and we both started laughing. We thought it was hilarious. The monkey definitely had a cheeky persona going on. We had such a great time there and these funny photos made it even better.”

Though the priceless snap was captured in December of 2018, the cheeky photo was only recently shared online.

“I posted the photo to my Facebook and Instagram and all my family and friends thought it was hilarious. The experience was one of the highlights of our trip, and the photo itself is something we can look back on to remember forever.”

Judy said the image was one of the highlights of the entire trip and she hopes to return to Bali with her family soon.

“Bali is such a beautiful place and we can’t wait to go back one day.”

Kick off the summer with this Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese that combines your favorite sweet and savory flavors into one delicious meal!

Kick off the summer with this Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese that combines your favorite sweet and savory flavors into one delicious meal!

This post is sponsored by Aidells Sausage Company, Inc.  All comments and opinions are my own.

Summer is my absolute favorite time of the year which means it’s officially GRILLING season!  Our grill is always in constant use during the spring/summer months because it’s just so easy to use with little clean-up and I don’t know about you, but everything just tastes so much better coming off of the grill!  Not only can you grill chicken, fish, steak, kabobs, I mean you name it, but guys, grilling pizza might just be the best thing you do all season.

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is host events in our backyard and since building our home last year, having friends and family over has been the best part of our move!  If you follow me on Instagram then you know how I love to throw a good party and with that comes making delicious food!  Grilling is essential for an outdoor gathering and it’s nice to mix things up sometimes.  Instead of serving up the usual summer favorites, having your guests make their own personal pizzas can be way more fun!

Kick off the summer with this Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese that combines your favorite sweet and savory flavors into one delicious meal!

When deciding on pizza toppings I am ALL about flavor combinations which is why I knew I needed Aidells® Dinner Sausage on my pizza.  I’ve been a huge fan of Aidells sausage links for quite a while now not only because they are crafted in small batches using the highest quality of meats and all-natural ingredients, but they are also made with no added hormones or nitrites so you can really feel good about what you are eating!

Aidells carries several delicious products all with unexpected flavor combinations such as bacon mushroom swiss, sun dried tomato with mozzarella, Cajun style andouille and even habanero with pepper jack cheese.  For this particular recipe I used Aidells smoked chicken and apple sausage links that contain their trademark spice blend along with delicious chunks of apple in every bite!

As you can see above, for a limited time, each package of Aidells sausage links currently has a sticker containing a unique summer recipe so make sure to look for that on the packaging the next time you’re at the store!

To really bring out that apple flavor in this sausage, I topped each pizza with some fresh apple slices along with goat cheese, baby arugula and finished it off with a drizzle of sweet honey vinaigrette.  If you’re not a fan of goat cheese, feel free to use some gorgonzola (which tastes delicious with apples!), burrata or really any cheese you prefer.  This pizza turned out incredible and was the perfect sweet and savory combination!

If you’re making pizza at a backyard cookout or even on a camping trip, it’s important that you pre-chop all of your toppings ahead of time.  I pre-sliced all the apples and put each of the toppings into individual containers so that assembly would be nice and easy for everyone!  We grilled the chicken sausage right there on the grill and sliced it up right before adding it to the pizzas.

To make the honey vinaigrette, I whisked together a little olive oil, some honey, Dijon mustard and fresh lemon juice and drizzled it over top of the pizza and arugula which really gave the pizza a sweet, fresh taste!  If you have any extra dressing left over, make sure to save it because it tastes great on salads too.  I actually make this vinaigrette a lot which is why I wanted to use it on this pizza.  A definite tried and true dressing that just tastes delicious on everything!

Now if you thought that was easy to make, grilling the actual pizza is even easier!  To keep things simple we used naan flatbreads that were brushed with a little olive oil.  Naan crisps up so nicely on the grill and is the perfect size for individual pizzas.  The key though to a good grilled pizza is placing the toppings on the pizza while it sits on the grill!  You’ll want to grill the naan first before adding any toppings, about 2 to 3 minutes per side, until you see some nice char marks and this is also a good time to go ahead and cook your sausage.  Then once the naan is ready, just add your cooked sausage, apple slices and goat cheese grilling for an additional 4 to 6 minutes until the cheese is nice and gooey!  Easy right??

This pizza is definitely a new summer favorite and one I can really enjoy eating because of all the fresh flavors and quality ingredients.  I purchased all of these ingredients at my local Safeway. You can easily find your closest Safeway store on their store finder here!  Safeway offers tons of delicious summer recipe inspiration so make sure to check them out!

So whether you’re hosting a backyard party or planning a fun camping trip with friends, this grilled pizza with sausage, apple and goat cheese is sure to be a winner with your family this summer!  Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we did!

How to Create MORE of Your Most Valuable Resource: TIME!

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/positivelypositive/positive/~3/Msc9j4WrV80/

Time is fluid.

It rolls, it slows down, it speeds up…it can seemingly stand still.

We experience the magic of time in many different ways.

It’s one thing every one of us on this planet has in common but it can be something we all perceive differently.

For us biz bosses, time is valuable. It’s your greatest asset.

Sometimes we have productive days where everything gets done and you’re left to bask in the afterglow of a complete to-do list.

But most days, it feels like there’s not enough time in the world to do all the things.

At times, we’re left wanting more time and in other instances, wanting less.

It’s critical to consciously create the time and space we need in our lives and our businesses so we can live happy and oh so healthy lives.

Following my dreams and running my own biz means endless to-do lists, daily meetings, calls and messages.

It means there is ALWAYS something to do.

I’m continuously taking action and making decisions not just for myself but for the amazing people I get to lead.

It’s exhilarating and I love it but I also need to manage it like a boss so it doesn’t manage me.

If you’re just starting out, time can feel ESPECIALLY crazy.

You have a million thoughts in your head, a million things to do…and you may be doing it with a toddler running around your knees or while juggling two part-time jobs.

Believe me, I’ve been there.

So I’m here to help.

Let’s get you consciously creating your own time and space so you can make the most of it, start seeing results and achieve that next level of success.

Focus, focus, focus.

I know sometimes that can be easier said than done.

Especially when my 9-year-old Madeline is running around giggling, my cellphone is going off and I’m rushing to Pilates in the morning.

But it CAN be done.

And the best way to focus is to make a to-do list. Every day.

Write down your list of things to in order of importance. Don’t overdo it either. Focus on three tasks that HAVE to get done that day.

Throughout the day, consult your list and check off things as you go.

Not only does this give you a sense of accomplishment, it fires you up to keep going.

Rinse and Repeat…every day.

Another trick is to block off time in your calendar for tasks.

Have you been trying to write the copy for your new website for the last six months and you just never seem to be able to get to it?

Then block off time every Monday for the next month, set aside two hours and during those two hours, turn off your phone and get to work. 🙂

Seriously though, running your own biz requires a great deal of self-motivation. And sometimes you gots-to-be THE boss and tell yourself to get the heck to work.

Eliminate those pesky distractions and tap into a flow state

Ping. Ping. Ping. Beep. Ring…

My husband Wes yelling at me that dinner was ready an hour ago….

Haha…IT. NEVER. STOPS.

I’m sure you feel me.

Sometimes, you just have to turn it all off. Your phone, your laptop, even your Roomba… I actually highly recommend it.

My phone is my lifeline because I basically use it while running every aspect of my biz, but it can be a MASSIVE distraction.

If you’re distracted while trying to complete a task, you’re not going to produce anything you’ll be proud of. @hayleyhobson (Click to Tweet!)

Hearing the pings and beeps and rings all day long can give you a one-way ticket to crazy town.

Got a blog to write? Turn your phone off…put it another room….whatever you have to do to eliminate the distraction.

If you have kids…it’s a lot more difficult to eliminate distractions, but it can be done.

Can you get a friend to watch them for a couple of hours a day? Can you make a work agreement with your partner? Can you get the most pressing stuff done while your little one is in school or daycare?

I know it’s hard. But you can do this.

Set aside time for your best friend: self care

Okay….consciously-creating-time-rule-numero-uno….you’re no good to yourself, your clients, your family or anyone else if you’re stressed.

Yes, you have to do your invoicing, yes you have healthy lunches to make for your kids, yes you have three meetings today that you’re not fully prepared for…. STOP.

Take a big deep breath and picture yourself as a tiny little speck on a massive planet floating around in space.

For real!

And then I want you to untie the knot in your belly, slow down your heart rate using your breath and realize you are doing your best.

And nothing you do or don’t have time to get to will make the planet stop spinning.

Self care is so important because it will make your work ten times more productive.

If you’re practicing self-love on the daily, you shouldn’t get to the point where you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Take a bath. Read a book. Go for a hike in nature. Stare at a white wall.

Whatever you need to do to chill out and get centered…block off time for it in your calendar as you would any other task on your to-do list.

Your business, and your family and friends, will thank you for it.

Should You Have Sex or Make Love?

Several fellow Christian authors and bloggers have written about how couples should “make love” not “have sex.” These are colleagues I respect and admire, and I agree entirely with the principle underlying their point.

However, I’ve wondered if it really matters in common conversation. I’ve certainly talked about having sex in my own marriage, as one phrase among many options we have to describe our meaningful sexual intimacy. It would feel odd for me to label it as making love every time. In fact, my husband has been known to initiate in such unromantic ways as “Are we going to copulate today?” (His defense is “hey, it worked.”) Yet I still understand how meaningful sex is to him.

With this in mind, I posted to my closed Facebook group, outlining the issue and asking: What do you think about using “having sex”? Is it really important to you that you, your spouse, or others call it “making love?”

Here what I learned.

People have varied perspectives and preferences.

I cannot advise readers to use one phrase over another, because your spouse might see it differently. Among the answers I got were:

  • making love applies to the whole of sexual activities in the marriage bed while having sex is intercourse
  • making love feels cheesy and uncomfortable while having sex sounds more natural
  • having sex feels more shallow than making love
  • making love is long, slow, and passionate while having sex is fast-paced and pleasure-driven

And plenty said you can call it whatever you like, it’s always making love because that’s how their marriage bed feels.

The specific language matters a great deal to some—and not necessarily in one way or the other—and not as much to others. Whatever you call sexual intimacy in your marriage, however, it should sound respectful and attractive to your spouse. So ask what they like. You might find out it matters more than you thought or less than you thought.

Culture and generation are factors in word choice.

I remember talking to my sons once about what body parts are called these days…and being astounded by the common use of a word that has no negative connotation in their generation but certainly does in mine. Who’s right on this one? Well, we have to consider culture and context in word choices. In my culture, that label would be a no-go; in theirs, it’s not a big deal.

As it turns out, this appears to be true with making love and having sex—with several younger couples saying making love sounded weird, like a euphemism for people who can’t bring themselves to say the actual words. Now that’s not true of everyone their age, but it’s an interesting perspective.

Some phrases for sex might appeal to people from one region or in one generation or with one background while other phrases appeal to those from different regions, generations, and backgrounds. As an example, references to being “ridden” as part of sex don’t bother me a bit, maybe because I’m a Texan who’s ridden horses, enjoyed rodeos, and seen the affection a rider and the ridden can have. Yet for someone else, that phrase could feel understandably disrespectful. Culture and context matter.

Spouses want sex to be pleasurable and meaningful.

Whatever you call it, spouses want sex to be both pleasurable and meaningful. The point colleagues have made about making love > having sex gets at this very point. While I don’t see the importance of the phrasing the way they do, I agree entirely that sex should be more than a physical act. It should involve our whole selves—body, mind, heart, and soul.

The responses I got from the group members demonstrate this desire. Husbands and wives both want experiences that are physically exciting and satisfying, while recognizing the underlying commitment and intimacy to what they do in their marriage bed. As one husband aptly put it: “Yes, we have sex, intercourse, coitus, I ‘know my wife’, we ‘do it, have a quickie… and whatever else you call it, but in all of those things (and many others) we are making love to each other.”

Husbands and wives both want experiences that are physically exciting and satisfying, while recognizing the underlying commitment and intimacy to what they do in their marriage bed. @hotholyhumorous

What will I call it in my resources?

I call it everything under the sun. I’m a writer, a crafter of words, a lover of language. I like using all the options available to me, as long as they are accurate and respectful. Since I don’t personally find anything problematic about having sex or making love, I’ll use both of those. But also sexual intimacy, physical intimacy, and any number of nicknames for The Deed. You can check out a few interesting euphemisms for sex here: What Euphemisms for Sex Do You Use?

But please know that I honor your desire for sex to be both pleasurable and meaningful. That is God’s design for sex in marriage—that both spouses feel good, feel connected, feel honored in this intimate experience.
