We all spend a good time thinking about it, preparing it, eating it, and then cleaning up afterward, but how many of us have ever thought about the many activities associated with food as a spiritual practice? What if instead of seeing these activities as chores or engaging in them purely for pleasure, we could use them to increase our kindness and care and as reminders of how we wish to live out the values that bring meaning to our lives? The Venerable Thubten Chodron has been a Buddhist nun since 1977. She has been a close student of the Dalai Lama with whom she’s co-authored several books. She is also founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey. One of the first Tibetan Buddhist training monasteries for Western monks and nuns in America. Known for her warm, practical, and humorous explanations of how to apply Buddhist teachings in daily life, Venerable Chodron joins us today to talk about her latest book, The Compassionate Kitchen, in which she shares some of the practices from the Buddhist tradition that help us make eating become part of our daily spiritual practice. Venerable Thubten Chodron, welcome…

Reading Strategies and Habits with Jim Kwik: Learn to Speed Read and Retain More Information

Did you know millionaires read more books? And before you think that’s because having wealth created more time for them, they read more before they had wealth.

I try to read as much as I can but I also have a lot of books on my bookshelf that I haven’t touched. Can you relate?

I remember I scoffed the first time I read about Warren Buffet spending 80% of his time reading. But books are a direct line to someone’s years of hard-won expertise and research so don’t you think it’s worth the time to soak up that learning and apply it your business and life?

The truth is, you can learn to read a lot faster than you do now AND retain the information.

You just need to find the right coach. And that’s where my guest + brain coach Jim Kwik comes in. Jim has coached me and I learned so many things from him that I wanted you to have access to as well!

Jim once read one book a DAY for four and a half YEARS. He’s going to help you read at least twice as fast as you do now so you can start soaking up all that wisdom sitting on your bookshelves and nightstand! Ready?

Click here to watch the episode.

I’ll be taking on the challenge Jim gives us in the episode this week, and I hope you’ll join too. Share your progress with me in a comment or on Instagram.

What Is Your Inner Critic Saying to You?

It’s time to cut yourself some slack. Most of us are experts at being hard on ourselves and novices at being easy with ourselves. Listen to your self-talk. How many times per day do you tell yourself something to the tune of: “I’m not good enough, I am not deserving, something is wrong with me, I should have done or been more, better or different”? And is telling yourself these things bringing more joy, fulfillment, success and peace into your life? I suspect not.

If you talked to your friends the way you talk to yourself and had the expectations of them you have of yourself, how many friends would you have? Today let’s UPdate the old “Golden Rule” to: “do onto yourself what you do to others and do not do onto yourself what you would not do to others.”

It’s time to mute the voice of your inner critic because the more airtime you give it, the more you start to believe all the lies you are telling yourself. @ChristinHassler (Click to Tweet!)

Here is the truth: You are perfect, whole and complete just as you are. You have never done anything wrong and have always done the best you could. There is nothing bad, broken or undeserving about you. What other people think of you is none of your business. It is your human right (and purpose) to express and share all your fabulous qualities!

It’s time to befriend yourself by choosing UPlifting self-talk. My prescription to support you in doing this is to incorporate these two very simple daily practices:

1. Every morning when you wake up or on your way to work, listen to the song I’m Amazing and believe the lyrics as you sing along.

2. Read this passage by Marianne Williamson, out loud, while looking at yourself in the mirror. Trust me, it’s powerful.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make and manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson

Today, declare yourself an expert at self-acceptance and apply the Golden Rule onto yourself!

P.S. I have a new podcast where I coach people LIVE on the air. Head over to Over it and On With It and listen in for inspiration and action steps.

Christine Hassler has broken down the complex and overwhelming experience of recovering from disappointment into a step-by-step treatment plan in her new book Expectation Hangover. This book reveals the formula for how to process disappointment on the emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual levels to immediately ease suffering. Instead of wallowing in regret, self-recrimination, or anger, we can see these experiences as catalysts for profound transformation and doorways that open to possibility. You can find more info on her website, and follow her on Twitter and FB.

Rapists in Alabama to Face Less Prison Time Than Doctors Who Perform Abortions for Rape Victims

In a shockingly draconian move, Alabama just passed an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

House Bill 314—or the “Human Life Protection Act”—passed in Alabama’s State Senate after a 25 to 6 vote on Tuesday. The bill now heads to the desk of Alabama’s Governor Kay Ivey. If the Republican governor signs the bill, it will become law.

While HB 314 leaves no exceptions for rape or incest, it does allow for abortions when “necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk” to the woman. The entire text of the bill can be found here.

The bill also reclassifies abortion as a Class A felony, which is punishable by up to 99 years in prison for doctors who preform the procedure after the bill becomes law.

Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton said in the debate before the vote:

It’s a sad day in Alabama. You just said to my daughter, you don’t matter, you don’t matter in the state of Alabama.”

Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth celebrated the bill’s passage on Twitter.

The ACLU took to Twitter just minutes after.

In language that Jewish advocates have calledoutrageously offensive,” the bill compares lives lost in the Holocaust to the number of abortions performed since Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision protecting s a woman’s right to the procedure.

In late April, Alabama’s House of Representatives approved HB314 in a vote of 74 to 3. After Republicans blocked an a rape an incest amendment, 28 of the state’s 105 representatives refused to vote on the measure.

Staci Fox, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates, called the bill a “death sentence for women across this state.”

Supporters of a women’s right to choose have become increasingly vocal across social media platforms since the bill’s approval on Tuesday.

Attacks on the legality of abortion at the state level have ramped up in the last year. Just last week Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp signed a bill into law effectively prohibiting abortions after a heartbeat is detected. A heartbeat can often be detected 5-6 weeks into pregnancy, which is long before most women even know they’re pregnant. Georgie was the fourth state to pass a new abortion law in 2019.

Anti-abortion activists hope the recent onslaught of anti-abortion laws will cause the issue to be taken up, once again, by the Supreme Court with the goal of overturning Roe v. Wade. Advocates of stricter abortion laws aren’t shy about their goals. In fact, Representative Terri Collins, sponsor of HB314, called the bill a “direct attack” on Roe v. Wade. Collins said just last week, “The heart of this bill is to confront a decision that was made by the courts in 1973 that said the baby in the womb is not a person.”

The new law will not go into effect until six months after Governor Kay Ivey signs what some are calling a real-life Handmaid’s Tale.
