Kentucky Lawmakers Propose Bizarre Ban on Tattooing Over Scars, but Won’t Explain Why

https://themindunleashed.com/2019/05/kentucky-ban-tattooing-over-scars.html

Kentucky health officials are proposing a ban on the practice of tattooing over scars, along with numerous other regulations for the industry. The new restriction is hidden deep within a lengthy bill that focuses specifically on the tattoo industry. It is not clear why lawmakers felt that this particular detail was important to include.

Cabinet for Health and Family Services spokesman Doug Hogan would not explain the logic behind any specific parts of the bill, but said there is still a chance for the public to express their concerns about the potential legislation.

“Regulations in this area have not been updated for about 15 years. Public comments are being accepted through the end of May. DPH will review and analyze all comments and then determine what changes, if any, need to be made to the regulations,” Hogan wrote in an email to WFPL.

As expected, the proposal drew criticism from the industry and from people who have an interest in the art of tattooing, but doctors have also objected to the proposed measure.

David Levine, a researcher and doctor at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, said that the new law is not based on any scientific research, saying:

“I think probably the issue is that it’s a blanket statement, and it probably should have been more specific to the reason that the skin was scarred in the first place. There are people that are using cosmetic tattooing to actually reduce the appearance of scars.”

Levine did say that there are specific types of scars, known as a keloid, which can sometimes cause complications with tattoos, however, the situation is very rare and could be approached on a case by case basis.

“If you have a history of having any kind of keloid scarring, then putting the tattoo anywhere on the body would likely lead to more keloid scarring,” Levine said.

Mike Martin, president of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, says that the industry already regulates itself when it comes to tattooing over scars and there is no history of problems. Martin explained:

“It’s not an issue if a person comes into the shop and wants to get their scar covered up because it’s embarrassing and the scar’s well-healed, and been healed for years. Our rule of thumb is a year, and then look at them and make a determination.”

“It’s person’s body, it’s their scar, you know? Can they really tell people they can’t do that to themselves? And how would they even regulate that or enforce a law on that?” Martin asked.

Buddy Wheeler, owner of Tattoo Charlie’s in both Louisville and Lexington, said that this law could have serious implications for any type of cover-up work. Wheeler explained:

“We do a lot of tattoos for people who have self-harm scars to cover those up. We do a lot of tattoos for people who have had some sort of surgery to cover those [scars] and disguise those. A tattoo itself is creating a scar — so if you take away the ability to tattoo over scars, you’re taking away the ability to do any coverups, any rework, anything like that.”

A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for May 28 in Frankfort, Kentucky.

What Is Your Inner Critic Saying to You?

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/positivelypositive/positive/~3/A8rzopa26nI/

It’s time to cut yourself some slack. Most of us are experts at being hard on ourselves and novices at being easy with ourselves. Listen to your self-talk. How many times per day do you tell yourself something to the tune of: “I’m not good enough, I am not deserving, something is wrong with me, I should have done or been more, better or different”? And is telling yourself these things bringing more joy, fulfillment, success and peace into your life? I suspect not.

If you talked to your friends the way you talk to yourself and had the expectations of them you have of yourself, how many friends would you have? Today let’s UPdate the old “Golden Rule” to: “do onto yourself what you do to others and do not do onto yourself what you would not do to others.”

It’s time to mute the voice of your inner critic because the more airtime you give it, the more you start to believe all the lies you are telling yourself. @ChristinHassler (Click to Tweet!)

Here is the truth: You are perfect, whole and complete just as you are. You have never done anything wrong and have always done the best you could. There is nothing bad, broken or undeserving about you. What other people think of you is none of your business. It is your human right (and purpose) to express and share all your fabulous qualities!

It’s time to befriend yourself by choosing UPlifting self-talk. My prescription to support you in doing this is to incorporate these two very simple daily practices:

1. Every morning when you wake up or on your way to work, listen to the song I’m Amazing and believe the lyrics as you sing along.

2. Read this passage by Marianne Williamson, out loud, while looking at yourself in the mirror. Trust me, it’s powerful.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make and manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson

Today, declare yourself an expert at self-acceptance and apply the Golden Rule onto yourself!

Love,

Christine

Kick off the summer with this Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese that combines your favorite sweet and savory flavors into one delicious meal!

Kick off the summer with this Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese that combines your favorite sweet and savory flavors into one delicious meal!

This post is sponsored by Aidells Sausage Company, Inc.  All comments and opinions are my own.

Summer is my absolute favorite time of the year which means it’s officially GRILLING season!  Our grill is always in constant use during the spring/summer months because it’s just so easy to use with little clean-up and I don’t know about you, but everything just tastes so much better coming off of the grill!  Not only can you grill chicken, fish, steak, kabobs, I mean you name it, but guys, grilling pizza might just be the best thing you do all season.

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is host events in our backyard and since building our home last year, having friends and family over has been the best part of our move!  If you follow me on Instagram then you know how I love to throw a good party and with that comes making delicious food!  Grilling is essential for an outdoor gathering and it’s nice to mix things up sometimes.  Instead of serving up the usual summer favorites, having your guests make their own personal pizzas can be way more fun!

Kick off the summer with this Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese that combines your favorite sweet and savory flavors into one delicious meal!

When deciding on pizza toppings I am ALL about flavor combinations which is why I knew I needed Aidells® Dinner Sausage on my pizza.  I’ve been a huge fan of Aidells sausage links for quite a while now not only because they are crafted in small batches using the highest quality of meats and all-natural ingredients, but they are also made with no added hormones or nitrites so you can really feel good about what you are eating!

Aidells carries several delicious products all with unexpected flavor combinations such as bacon mushroom swiss, sun dried tomato with mozzarella, Cajun style andouille and even habanero with pepper jack cheese.  For this particular recipe I used Aidells smoked chicken and apple sausage links that contain their trademark spice blend along with delicious chunks of apple in every bite!

As you can see above, for a limited time, each package of Aidells sausage links currently has a sticker containing a unique summer recipe so make sure to look for that on the packaging the next time you’re at the store!

To really bring out that apple flavor in this sausage, I topped each pizza with some fresh apple slices along with goat cheese, baby arugula and finished it off with a drizzle of sweet honey vinaigrette.  If you’re not a fan of goat cheese, feel free to use some gorgonzola (which tastes delicious with apples!), burrata or really any cheese you prefer.  This pizza turned out incredible and was the perfect sweet and savory combination!

If you’re making pizza at a backyard cookout or even on a camping trip, it’s important that you pre-chop all of your toppings ahead of time.  I pre-sliced all the apples and put each of the toppings into individual containers so that assembly would be nice and easy for everyone!  We grilled the chicken sausage right there on the grill and sliced it up right before adding it to the pizzas.

To make the honey vinaigrette, I whisked together a little olive oil, some honey, Dijon mustard and fresh lemon juice and drizzled it over top of the pizza and arugula which really gave the pizza a sweet, fresh taste!  If you have any extra dressing left over, make sure to save it because it tastes great on salads too.  I actually make this vinaigrette a lot which is why I wanted to use it on this pizza.  A definite tried and true dressing that just tastes delicious on everything!

Now if you thought that was easy to make, grilling the actual pizza is even easier!  To keep things simple we used naan flatbreads that were brushed with a little olive oil.  Naan crisps up so nicely on the grill and is the perfect size for individual pizzas.  The key though to a good grilled pizza is placing the toppings on the pizza while it sits on the grill!  You’ll want to grill the naan first before adding any toppings, about 2 to 3 minutes per side, until you see some nice char marks and this is also a good time to go ahead and cook your sausage.  Then once the naan is ready, just add your cooked sausage, apple slices and goat cheese grilling for an additional 4 to 6 minutes until the cheese is nice and gooey!  Easy right??

Kick off the summer with this Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese that combines your favorite sweet and savory flavors into one delicious meal!

This pizza is definitely a new summer favorite and one I can really enjoy eating because of all the fresh flavors and quality ingredients.  I purchased all of these ingredients at my local Safeway. You can easily find your closest Safeway store on their store finder here!  Safeway offers tons of delicious summer recipe inspiration so make sure to check them out!

So whether you’re hosting a backyard party or planning a fun camping trip with friends, this grilled pizza with sausage, apple and goat cheese is sure to be a winner with your family this summer!  Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we did!

Iran’s Military on the Cusp of War as US Allies Pull Troops From Iraq

https://themindunleashed.com/2019/05/iran-military-cusp-war-allies-pull-troops-iraq.html

In probably the most significant sign so far that we could be headed for yet another major war in the Middle East, multiple European allies of the United States are rapidly pulling their forces from Iraq and the Persian Gulf region on fears they could get unwillingly sucked into confrontation with Iran.

Tehran isn’t backing down the US escalation ladder either, given moments ago Iran’s Revolutionary Guard commander, Major General Hossein Salami, said via the Reuters newswire:

“We are on the cusp of a full scale confrontation with the enemy.”

Iran’s Minister of Defense Amir Hatami also vowed Wednesday“We will defeat the American-Zionist front,” according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). This follows on the heels of the US State Department’s dramatic ordering of an evacuation of all non-essential diplomatic personnel and their families from the American embassy in Baghdad, citing an “imminent” threat.

The USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group makes its way through the lengthy Suez Canal en route to the Persian Gulf.

As of Wednesday morning the countries of Spain, Germany, and the Netherlands have suspended military support operations in Iraq, citing rising US-Iran tensions. And further a top Iraqi diplomat told reporters at a press conference in Moscow that “Iraq is a sovereign nation. We will not let [the US] to use our territory” for any military operations against Iran.

Previously on Tuesday Spain was the first to announce that it ordered its military frigate, the Méndez Núñez, which has 215 sailors on board, out of a USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group currently en route to the Persian Gulf, citing “it will not enter into any other type of mission” in the Persian Gulf region, according to the Spanish Minister of Defense.

Minister of Defense Margarita Robles ordered the “temporary measure of withdrawal of the frigate Méndez Núñez (F-104) from the combat group of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln while it is in the Middle East,” sources from her office told the digital edition of El País.

As of early Wednesday Germany also announced it is temporarily suspending its operations in Iraq, which includes training local soldiers and security personnel as part of US-led coalition efforts.

“The German army has suspended the training,” defense ministry spokesman Jens Flosdorff announced, citing the “generally heightened alert, awareness” for soldiers in the region. However, echoing Britain’s top commander in the coalition, Flosdorff acknowledged there was “no concrete threat” at the moment. “Germany has no indications of its own of attacks supported by Iran,” Reuters quoted him as saying.

In total Germany has about about 160 soldiers deployed in Iraq, embedded as part of Operation Inherent Resolve in support of the US mission; but the peeling away of such an influential EU country could cause other international allies to follow.

The Netherlands also quickly followed suit, per Reuters early Wednesday: “The Dutch government has suspended a mission in Iraq that provides assistance to local authorities due to a security threat, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Wednesday.”

Like Germany’s military, Dutch troops assist in training Iraqi forces, especially in Erbil, northern Iraq, along with other international coalition partners.

Washington and Tehran have recently exchanged threats of direct conflict while jostling to assert control over the vital Strait of Hormuz narrow oil shipping passage, which has further left global oil markets on edge and rattled.

As tensions in the region started to surge, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said his nation was worried about the risk of accidental conflict “with an escalation that is unintended really on either side.” Then on Tuesday, Spain temporarily pulled one of its frigates from the U.S.-led combat fleet heading toward the Strait of Hormuz. That was followed by the unusual public challenge to the Trump administration by the general. — AP

The military build-up is claimed to be in response to intelligence the White House says confirms that US troops face imminent threat of attack by Iran and its regional proxy forces in places like Iraq, Syria, and the gulf.

But with a number of European allies increasingly vocal in questioning Bolton and the White House’s latest intelligence on which the current saber rattling is based, there’s a high likelihood the standoff could result in a number of European allies permanently ditching US support operations in the Middle East altogether.

In probably the most significant sign so far that we could be headed for yet another major war in the Middle East, multiple European allies of the United States are rapidly pulling their forces from Iraq and the Persian Gulf region on fears they could get unwillingly sucked into confrontation with Iran.

Rapists in Alabama to Face Less Prison Time Than Doctors Who Perform Abortions for Rape Victims

https://themindunleashed.com/2019/05/alabama-rapists-jail-time-doctors-abortions.html

In a shockingly draconian move, Alabama just passed an abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest.

House Bill 314—or the “Human Life Protection Act”—passed in Alabama’s State Senate after a 25 to 6 vote on Tuesday. The bill now heads to the desk of Alabama’s Governor Kay Ivey. If the Republican governor signs the bill, it will become law.

While HB 314 leaves no exceptions for rape or incest, it does allow for abortions when “necessary in order to prevent a serious health risk” to the woman. The entire text of the bill can be found here.

The bill also reclassifies abortion as a Class A felony, which is punishable by up to 99 years in prison for doctors who preform the procedure after the bill becomes law.

Senate Minority Leader Bobby Singleton said in the debate before the vote:

It’s a sad day in Alabama. You just said to my daughter, you don’t matter, you don’t matter in the state of Alabama.”

Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth celebrated the bill’s passage on Twitter.

The ACLU took to Twitter just minutes after.

In language that Jewish advocates have calledoutrageously offensive,” the bill compares lives lost in the Holocaust to the number of abortions performed since Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark decision protecting s a woman’s right to the procedure.

In late April, Alabama’s House of Representatives approved HB314 in a vote of 74 to 3. After Republicans blocked an a rape an incest amendment, 28 of the state’s 105 representatives refused to vote on the measure.

Staci Fox, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates, called the bill a “death sentence for women across this state.”

Supporters of a women’s right to choose have become increasingly vocal across social media platforms since the bill’s approval on Tuesday.

Attacks on the legality of abortion at the state level have ramped up in the last year. Just last week Georgia’s Governor Brian Kemp signed a bill into law effectively prohibiting abortions after a heartbeat is detected. A heartbeat can often be detected 5-6 weeks into pregnancy, which is long before most women even know they’re pregnant. Georgie was the fourth state to pass a new abortion law in 2019.

Anti-abortion activists hope the recent onslaught of anti-abortion laws will cause the issue to be taken up, once again, by the Supreme Court with the goal of overturning Roe v. Wade. Advocates of stricter abortion laws aren’t shy about their goals. In fact, Representative Terri Collins, sponsor of HB314, called the bill a “direct attack” on Roe v. Wade. Collins said just last week, “The heart of this bill is to confront a decision that was made by the courts in 1973 that said the baby in the womb is not a person.”

The new law will not go into effect until six months after Governor Kay Ivey signs what some are calling a real-life Handmaid’s Tale.

Grilled Sausage & Apple Pizza with Goat Cheese

This pizza is definitely a new summer favorite and one I can really enjoy eating because of all the fresh flavors and quality ingredients.  I purchased all of these ingredients at my local Safeway. You can easily find your closest Safeway store on their store finder here!  Safeway offers tons of delicious summer recipe inspiration so make sure to check them out!

So whether you’re hosting a backyard party or planning a fun camping trip with friends, this grilled pizza with sausage, apple and goat cheese is sure to be a winner with your family this summer!  Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we did!
